Intro

Arstelio — Payments Platform Redesign

Arstelio is a B2B payments platform operating across five markets in West and East Africa. When I joined the project, the product had accumulated two years of design debt, a component library nobody trusted, and a transaction completion rate that had plateaued at 41%.

Problem

What Was Breaking

The core flow — initiating a payment, selecting a recipient, confirming and sending — required users to context-switch across four screens and remember information they'd already entered. On mobile, three of those screens were below the fold.

Support data told the rest of the story: 68% of inbound tickets were about payment failures, most of which were user errors that a better UI would have prevented. The team was spending more time on support than on shipping.

Solution

What We Built

We collapsed the four-screen flow into a single progressive surface. Context — recipient history, account balances, exchange rates — was surfaced inline rather than requiring navigation. A smart-fill layer pre-populated known fields from the user's recent activity.

The component library was rebuilt with a two-layer token system. Every spacing value, colour role, and typography scale was tokenised. The library shipped with 64 components and 1:1 Figma-to-code parity, which meant the engineering team could move without waiting on design clarification.

Results

What Changed

Transaction completion rose from 41% to 79% within eight weeks of launch. Average time to complete a transfer dropped from 4 minutes 12 seconds to 1 minute 48 seconds. Support tickets related to payment errors fell by 54%.

The design system was adopted by two adjacent product teams within three months. Six months post-launch, the completion rate had held at 76% — the initial lift wasn't a spike.
